Posting groups in Business Central help connect different entities—like customers, vendors, items, resources, and sales or purchase documents — to the right general ledger (G/L) accounts.
They make your posting process faster, more accurate, and reduce the chances of errors.
When you post a transaction, Business Central automatically sends the amounts to the G/L Accounts defined in the related posting group.
Before setting up posting groups, you must have a Chart of Accounts in place.
Types of Posting Groups
Posting groups are divided into three main categories:
1. General Posting Groups
These define who you sell to or buy from, and what you sell or buy. By combining customer/vendor and item posting groups, you can determine which income statement accounts will be used for posting transactions. They also help you filter and analyze reports based on different groups.
2. Specific Posting Groups
These handle detailed postings through sales or purchase documents instead of posting directly to the general ledger. For example, when you post an invoice, the system automatically creates entries in both the customer/vendor ledger and the general ledger, ensuring proper linkage between them.
3. Tax Posting Groups
These define the tax rates and calculation rules for the entities you sell to or buy from, as well as the items or services involved. They help ensure that VAT or other taxes are applied correctly on every transaction.

General Posting Groups
General posting groups define who you trade with and what you trade.
They are mainly used to map customers, vendors, items, and resources to the right G/L accounts for sales and purchases.
| Type | Description |
| General Business Posting Groups | Assign this group to customers and vendors to specify who you sell to and buy from. You can organize them by region or type of business. For example, group customers by Domestic or Export. Set these up on the Gen. Business Posting Groups page. |
| General Product Posting Groups | Assign this group to items and resources to specify what you sell and buy. You can organize them by product type, such as Raw Materials, Retail Items, or Resources. Set these up on the Gen. Product Posting Groups page. |
| General Posting Setups | Combine Business and Product posting groups to determine which G/L accounts transactions will post to. For example, sales of the same item can post to different accounts depending on the customer’s business group. Configure these on the General Posting Setup page. |

Specific Posting Groups
Specific posting groups define where to post transactions for each type of data, such as customers, vendors, inventory, or bank accounts.
| Type | Description |
| Customer Posting Groups | Define accounts for Accounts Receivable transactions. These groups decide which accounts are used when posting customer-related entries like invoices and credit memos. Set up on the Customer Posting Groups page. |
| Vendor Posting Groups | Define accounts for Accounts Payable, including service charges and payment discounts. Set up on the Vendor Posting Groups page. |
| Inventory Posting Groups | Define accounts for inventory transactions. Each item is linked to a posting group so that postings go to the correct G/L account based on the combination of inventory group and location. Set up on the Inventory Posting Groups page. |
| Bank Account Posting Groups | Define the G/L accounts used for bank account entries, making reconciliation easier. Set up on the Bank Account Posting Groups page. |
| Fixed Assets Posting Groups | Define accounts for asset-related transactions, such as acquisition costs, depreciation, disposal gains/losses, and maintenance expenses. Set up on the FA Posting Groups page. |
- Tax Posting Groups
Tax posting groups define how sales tax or VAT is calculated and posted for your customers, vendors, and items.
| Type | Description |
| Tax Business Posting Groups | Define how to calculate and post taxes for customers and vendors. You can create separate groups for Domestic, EU, and Export customers depending on tax rules. Set up on the Tax Business Posting Groups page. |
| Tax Product Posting Groups | Define the tax calculation rules for items and resources that you buy or sell. This ensures the correct tax percentage is applied. |
| Tax Posting Setup | Combine tax business and tax product posting groups. When you post a sales, purchase, or journal line, the system uses this combination to find the correct tax accounts. |
